How do we know we’re impacting student learning?
In a nutshell
The client: A Christian school in suburban Melbourne.
The challenge: Separate the signal from the noise in our school’s data.
Lenses used:
- Data science
- Strategy
- Applied research
- Systems thinking
Our response: Develop a framework of academic key performance indicators aligned to the school’s strategy.
The impact: We removed complexity around data analysis and made life easier for teachers, leaders and staff.
Case Study
The challenge
Schools are awash with data. You could argue they’re drowning in it. This was the case with out client. The Deputy Principal was concerned that being unable to separate the signal from the noise, they were not getting value out of the data they had.
The Deputy Principal wanted us to help them resolve this issue. They asked us to design an analysis method that would help them use data more strategically across the school.
Our response
We began with reviewing the school’s strategy to understand what they were trying to achieve. We reviewed the school’s systems, platforms and tools to understand what data was available. We spoke with leaders and teachers about what data they found valuable and what was missing.
We then aligned the most useful and important pieces of data to the school’s strategic plan in a framework of academic key performance indicators. The framework included several types of indicators to capture both leading and lagging data. Each indicator included a target or threshold and the calculation method.
The change
The project removed complexity around data analysis at the school. By highlighting the data required to support the strategic plan, the school could move forward with confidence in knowing the impact it has on student learning.
